Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has been mandated with provision of drinking water & sanitation services to the rural population of the Province. It was originally established as an attached department in 1974 and was upgraded to administrative department in 1992. The department was merged with Communication and Works Department in 2001, however, after the realization of its enormous role in the public sphere it was re-established as an independent administrative department in 2009 and still intact. Vision of the PHE Department is ‘‘Every Citizen of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to have access to potable drinking water and Sanitation Facilities for ensuring high standard of Public Health’’ whereas mission is ‘‘Provision of Safe drinking water and sanitation facilities to the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in an efficient manner at an affordable cost without any discrimination to promote health, hygiene and cleaner environment”. The Department is responsible for planning, designing, construction, operation and maintenance of necessary infrastructure for provision of safe drinking water and Sanitation services to the general public. Presently PHED has provided and extended potable water services to 68% and also sewerage and drainage facilities to urban/rural population of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. PHED, taking forward the Provincial Government commitment to provide adequate quantity of safe drinking water to the entire population of the province, has led the development of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Drinking Water Policy 2015 got approved by provincial cabinet which is in line with the National Drinking Water Policy that recognizes access to safe drinking water as the basic human right. Similarly, contributing to the Provincial Government’s commitment to protect health of its citizens, PHED is playing lead role in drafting Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sanitation Policy with an implementation strategy which is under preparation.
